Peppermint oil works by acting on the muscle in the bowel wall to cause it to relax. This reduces painful cramps and muscle spasms. It is particularly useful in treating these symptoms in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and similar conditions.
This particular brand of Peppermint oil was tested by an IBS sufferer with severe symptoms. These included everything from severe pain and rapid motility through to occasional bouts of constipation.
The Gels were taken for a month with all effects noted, in particular the transit time of the product was noted and it was measured against the general claims for Peppermint oil.
It must also be noted that this particular product was not one of the highest rated on Amazon in the USA or UK. There were other products with higher reviews so please do not take it as a generic review for Peppermint Oil, this is very much a review of the ‘Now’ brand of Peppermint Oil.

From the very beginning it was unclear as to whether this product was working. The first few doses seemed to go unnoticed, however it would be fair to say that there were no improvements. Over the next few days a change did seem to emerge
Sadly this was not a positive change. While it did not adversely effect any of the main symptoms, over time there was a feeling of bowel soreness, which never really went away. This may have been coincidence, however this disappeared after the trial was complete.
The key feature of Peppermint Oil its it relaxing properties on the bowel, however this did not at any point transpire, and it would be very hard to pin point a benefit of taking this benefit. Despite this our rating reflects the fact that this product works for a number of people. It has received a five star rating on fourteen occasions and therefore does not deserve to be dismissed.
From researching the general reaction to Peppermint Oil it would seem that it is an option for the low to medium end of the IBS severity spectrum. It can be of great assistance to millions who have those symptoms, however it does appear to struggle when confronted by severe symptoms.
