We feel passionately that any IBS sufferer should look at long term solutions to their problems, however as sufferers ourselves we know that when we are in pain or suffering that is not what we want to hear.
The following section is dedicated to ‘quick fixes’, as we are aware that in desperate times, that we all need some help. To start with we take a look at the very popular ‘Imodium’ brand of anti-diarrheal medicine.
Most IBS-d sufferers will have encountered ‘Imodium’ at some point and it is easily available around the world. The important question therefore is does Imodium work, and more importantly does it offer a solution ?
We have also included an excellent piece from the wonderful Barbara Bradley Bolen, Ph.D. The piece answers the question ‘is Imodium safe for IBS sufferers ?
The internal debate over whether or not it is safe to take an Imodium (loperamide) before going out often adds to the stress and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The following overview of Imodium is offered to help you make an informed decision and put your mind at ease.
Benefits of Imodium
Common Side Effects
Imodium is usually well-tolerated and side effects are rare. Since Imodium does not have the ability to cross the blood/brain barrier, Imodium does not act on the central nervous system; therefore, there is no risk for addiction and side effects are generally found only in the area of digestive functioning (abdominal pain, cramps, vomiting or nausea, bloating and constipation).

We found Imodium to work most the time, but not all of the time. IBS-d sufferers may have any number of factors behind their condition and it is for this reason Imodium seemed to cope well with some conditions and not others. It could not be relied upon as a complete answer.
Imodium seems to work better for symptoms caused by fermentation, and osmotic diarrhea. This type of issue can be addressed properly by the Low FODMAP diet, however if you do not wish to restrict your diet IBS-d will flare up and in this instance Imodium works very well.
We found Imodium to be less effective in situations of stress. When we were suffering with anxiety and psychological concerns, we were able to ‘over ride’ the medication. It was not the answer in these situations. Imodium is an excellent product and it achieves its key aims, however it is one hundred miles away from being an answer. It is always wise to seek prevention rather than the cure, and while Imodium offers relief, we suggest you look elsewhere for lasting IBS-d management.
