Before we return to our ‘long term solution’ mantra, we must first just introduce this product. Available primarily in the UK, Buscopan is now available in the US.
How well this product will spread time will tell, however it has been very successful in the UK. Its main purposes are :
It is generally recommended as relief from flare ups which involve the above symptoms. While the above symptoms are eminently treatable, we all have flare ups when the pain can be unbearable, so we felt it prudent to examine a product that targets the pain of IBS.

This product appears to work well for those who do not have the very severe end of IBS. For those who suffer cramps and discomfort there is noticeable relief, if you do not find something like peppermint oil does not work for you, then this may e an answer to that specific problem.. We would recommend Peppermint oil as a first option.
For severe sufferers, this product is simply inadequate. IBS-d sufferers in particular will not be relieved by this product, it may remove some of the pain, however that will be about all. To be fair to the manufacturers, they do not make lavish claims, so we can not fault the product on that level.
If boating and cramping are problems for you, then we wholeheartedly recommend looking at your diet. Try an elimination diet, or the Low FODMAP diet to see if there are ways you can prevent the cramps in the first place. Even if you are following such diets and have managed to cut these symptoms right down, you may still wish to keep this product tucked away in the cupboard for the ‘bad days’. That would seem to be there best use, as an emergency back up to a more lasting solution such as a holistic look at your IBS.
